Beginner looking for first Electric.

by Shaun
(Canada)

Hello.
So i started playing guitar about a month ago and I've decided to buy my first electric guitar but I'm having some trouble deciding which one would be the best bang for my buck. My budget is about $200-400 and I really dont mind if the guitar is new or used.
The kind of music I listen to and want to play is basically metal.
Bands like Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, and guitar gods like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai are what I'm hoping to be able play (I know, pretty ambitious for a beginner :P).
Anyways hope this was enough information and would really appreciate if you could guide me in the right direction.

Don't know if you know what these guys play:

Satriani and Vai play Ibanez. Pantera and Megadeth play Dean guitars. Lamb of God I believe play ESP. Slayer and Metallica plays BC Rich I believe.

As a note, historically many of the best guitarists in the world play Fenders or Gibsons due to the versatility in sound and playability. Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Yngwie Malsteem, Jeff Beck, played Telecasters and Stratocasters most of the time. Jimmy Page did the first two Led Zep albums with a Telecaster before switching to a Gibson Les Paul. The rest stayed predominately with Stratocasters. An effects pedal can make any guitar sound heavy.

A Fender Strat or Telecaster can be had for about $400 CDN. The strat comes with a whammy bar so that may be more to your liking. There are Mexican made and American made strats. Little difference except the Mexican is about half the price. (i.e. USA strat costs $800).

However, BC Rich and Dean have decent entry level guitars for about $200-$300. BC Rich has one called a Warbeast. Dean has many Dimebag Darell tribute models that are affordable. These guitars along with the Ibanez, come with a Floyd Rose tremolo system. It means you can whammy up and down and all around. The beginning of Kickstart my Heart (motley Crue) would be the best example of a Floyd Rose tremolo (whammy). The strat is more limited in this area.

Good luck
