Electric Basses
Modern music needs electric basses to bring out that exciting bass line! The electric is an essential part of the music of the 21st century. This four stringed relative of the guitar is usually built with a solid body. The tones are amplified through the use of electronic pick ups and and amplifier.
Electric basses can be played in several ways. A bassist can sit or stand. Usually they stand, especially in smaller groups and combos, but playing in the seated position is used in orchestral settings. Some choose to lean the bass on their left leg, similar to the position used by a classical guitarist, but resting on the right leg is more common.
The upright bass was generally played with the fingers, and the electric is no different. However, since they are played in a similar manner to a guitar, some players choose to use a pick for playing. Metal and punk players are more likely to use a pick because of the sharper sound, while jazz players are more likely to use their fingers. The thumb is used as well. Some players with strong fingernails use them instead of a pick.
Bass guitars sound different depending on just where the notes are plucked. Some players play up toward the high end of the neck, while others play down by the bridge. Of course, many play in between. Another variation in playing styles is that of slapping the strings to add percussive texture to the bass line.
The element added by electric basses is a combination of a melodic bass line and a rhythmic beat at the base of the music. Many young people like to turn up the bass on their car stereos and let the beat of the bass guitar rumble through the entire car, and sometimes through the cars next to them! The bass has grown to be a very popular part of modern music.
