Electric Guitar Doesn't Sound Electric?

by G
(Vancouver)

Hey guys I'm totally new to playing a guitar and I'd like to learn to play heavy metal. The question I have though is that I recently bought a starter pack with an amp and all but, to me it just sounds like an amplified acoustic. I'm assuming this has something to do with the kind of amplifier I have. If someone could please explain what I need to do to get the metal sorta sound out of my guitar that would be great. Thanks.

Amp types
by: Anonymous

This is a bit difficult to nail down without knowing exactly what kind of amp you have. Most amps, will have either a pre and post gain knob, or an overdrive switch, or a "gain" or "drive" knob. With pre/post amps, the pre-amp is what distorts the amp by overdriving the amp circuit, the post-amp is your power amp which amplifies the sound itself. So in that case, turn your pre-amp almost all the way up and the post-amp down because that will end up controlling your volume. With a drive knob amp, turn that all the way over and your master volume down a bit and use that to control your volume. Other amps have simply a channel select button or switch to switch between a clean and overdrive channel. Use that if its the case. Others are just a master volume like the old Marshall Plexi amps. These, all you can do is crank the hell out of it to get that distortion sound. If you have a vintage amp like an old fender or vox or something, well they're simply nothing you can do to get that tone straight out of the amp. The solution is to buy a distortion pedal. My suggestion is either a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone, or a Line 6 Uber Metal pedal. Good luck.

Simply put, it doesn't matter what guitar or amp you have, just grab a distortion peddel and turn it up !! Rock On !!
