Electric guitar tuning made simple: use a guitar tuner or tune by ear.
Electric guitar tuning can be very challenging for the beginner. Particulary if he or she
is trying to do it by ear. Being able to tune an electric guitar by ear involves a lot of
practice. Don't expect to be able to do it perfectly if you're just starting out.
Luckily all you need for perfect electric guitar tuning is a good guitar tuner. There are
several brands available today. Personally I do not make it a habit of tuning my electric
guitar by ear anymore. I save so much time when I use an electric guitar tuner. Sometimes I
use a pitch pipe, a keyboard, or piano.
But what if you want to tune your guitar by ear? Well first of all you need to know the
standard tuning of a six string guitar. It's simple:
6th string: E
5th string: A
4th string: D
3rd string: G
2nd string: B
1st string: E
All you have to do is match the notes on the adjacent strings.
It's better if your 6th string is already tuned to E. But since this is relative
tuning you will most likely not have a perfect E to start with. Your guitar will be tuned with itself
although not with other instruments.
6th string, 5th fret should match the tone of the 5th string open.
5th string, 5th fret should match the tone of the 4th string open.
4th string, 5th fret should match the tone of the 3rd string open.
3rd string, 4th fret should match the tone of the 2nd string open.
2nd string, 5th fret should match the tone of the 1st string open.
These are two methods. You can either use an electric guitar tuner, or match the notes on adjacent strings.
