Free electric guitar lesson for beginners. Holding the electric guitar.

In this segment of our free electric guitar lesson we are going to talk about how to hold an electric guitar.

You will need a chair. The best one to get is one that has no arms. Your posture is important. Make your self comfortable but do not slouch. You should sit with your back against the back of the chair. You don't want to suffer from back problems later in life. Do you? I'm not trying to scare you.

Let's continue with our free electric guitar lesson...

How do you hold your guitar? It's simple. The back of the guitar should rest on your chest and the bottom of the neck should be parallel to the floor. The thickest string (low E) should be closest to your face while the thinnest string (high E) should be closest to the floor.

Are you a left hander? If you are, you need a left handed guitar. The strings go the opposite way on a left-handed guitar. A left hander would need to hold chords with the right hand and strum with the left. It's the opposite for a right hander.

So a right handed person would use a guitar with the headstock pointing to the left, while a left handed person would point the headstock to the right. It's only natural.

If you are a right hander, the body of your electric guitar should be resting on your right leg. It's the opposite for a lefty using a left handed guitar.

To end this segment of our free electric guitar lesson, let's talk about the fretting hand. It's the hand used to hold down the chords (or the notes if you prefer). It's the hand on the neck of your electric guitar. Rest your thumb behind the neck of the guitar and curl your fingers at the knuckles over the strings.
