How to tune an electric guitar: octaves and chords.
Do you want to know how to tune an electric guitar? If so you're in the right place. There are a few ways to do that.
One way of tuning your electric guitar is by octaves. An octave is the interval between two notes with the same name. Let's say you play the C major scale: C D E F G A B C. In that case the two C's are one octave apart.
So the following should each be one octave apart.
6th string open and 5th string, 7th fret
5th string open and 4th string, 7th fret
4th string open and 3rd string, 7th fret
3rd string open and 2nd string, 8th fret
2nd string open and 1st string, 7th fret.
How to tune an electric guitar: use chords.
You can also tune your electric guitar by using chords. I have used this method frequently in the past and sometimes when I'm not close to an electric guitar tuner, I still do. You first of all have to know how the chord should sound and make adjustments accordingly. If you have a good ear this is not too difficult. But if you're a beginner it could prove to be a challenge. As with everything, practice makes perfect.
Tuning a guitar by ear has its advantages. It is a good way to develop your ear. With a lot of practice you will simply become better and better.
The choice is yours. You can either tune your guitar the old fashioned way, i.e. by ear, or you can use an electric guitar tuner. With so many cheap electric guitar tuners available nowadays you would probably want to keep one handy. No matter how good your ear is, you will never match the precision of an electric guitar tuner.
