Depends on your budget to some extent. For around $450.00 you can get a Fender Standard Stratocaster (made in Mexico) This is a real Fender guitar and looks and sounds great. For about $150.00 you can get the Fender Squier Stratocaster. This is a decent guitar for a beginner to intermediate player. Most important thing is to get a guitar which feels right to your son. NOT the one with the flashiest paint job! There are other brands like Ibanez, Epiphone and Jay Turser to name a few. See what feels and sounds right and fits the budget.
