Right handed or left handed guitar for a beginner 8 year old left handed student?

My son who is 8 years old wants to learn the electric guitar. He is left handed but all the smaller size electric guitars we found cater for right handed kids. They told us it doesn't matter that he's left handed and that he should get a right handed one. is that right? Can you advise me on what to do? Thanks

I'm not quite sure what to recommend. I'm a lefty playing right-handed, like lots of famous lefties. My picking (right hand) is disastrous, and so I tend to play with my fingers instead. I'm not entirely sure what is the ratio of lefties playing right handed vs. playing left handed. As you have noticed, there are a whole lot more right-handed instruments out there, and I would venture to say that it's a lot easier to find a spare right handed instrument than left handed.

If you really want a left-handed guitar but can't find one, you can follow the example of Jimi Hendrix, who played left-handed on a re-strung right-handed guitar, that is to say, his guitar was upside down.
