Ritter Basses

These basses are each hand built by Jens Ritter and come in several key shapes and finishes. One of the most stunning of the shapes is the Jupiter, which is an artistically styled bass unlike any others. The Seal and the Raptor are other unique and beautiful designs.

Ritters are built with bolt-on necks instead of neck through construction, because he feels that the bolt-on improves the sound by giving you faster attack and a longer sustain by breaking up the oscillation energy between the nut and the bridge. Bolt-on necks are considered less durable by other bass makers, but Ritter prefers them.

Ritter basses are made in Germany, and cost in the thousands, with $8000 or $9000 being a distinct possibility. The price is dependent on a variety of factors, such as the finish and the shape. Jens Ritter uses several different finishes, some of which are clear over interestingly grained or stained wood.

Grandpa's natural is a finish used on Ritter basses which is made up of natural oils and extensively sanded between oiling. It has a soft, natural look. High gloss lacquer is a shiny durable finish used over beautiful wood grains. Carrara is a frosted white lacquer. Futura is a frosted, matte black finish with an elegant look. Piano is a black, polished, high gloss finish.

Basses made by Ritter also come in several unique colors that can be finished in high gloss or Grandpa's natural. These colors include a golden topaz color called "late lounge," a rich orange called "orange honey," a deep red called "red champagne," and a deep blue-green called "ocean turquoise."
