How to tune electric guitars. Online Electric Guitar Tuner

How does one tune electric guitars?

You can tune your guitar or electric guitar here.

First of all here's the standard tuning of a six string guitar:

  • 6th string: E
  • 5th string: A
  • 4th string: D
  • 3rd string: G
  • 2nd string: B
  • 1st string: E

The first string being the thinnest, and the sixth string the fattest.

You can tune electric guitars by ear or you can make use of a guitar tuner. You can get good electric guitar tuners for less than 50 bucks easily. Even less than 20 bucks.

All you have to do is follow the guide on your guitar tuner. You will be guided as to whether the pitch is too high or too low. You can also make use of a pitch pipe or piano.

Relative tuning: tuning an electric guitar by ear

Let's assume that your 6th string is already in tune (an E note).

It simply involves matching the notes on the adjacent strings.

  • Hold down the 6th string on the 5th fret. It should match the tone of the 5th string open.

  • Hold down the 5th string on the 5th fret. It should match the tone of the 4th string open.

  • Hold down the 4th string on the 5th fret. It should match the tone of the 3rd string open.

  • Hold down the 3rd string on the 4th fret. It should match the tone of the 2nd string open.

  • Hold down the 2nd string on the 5th fret. It should match the tone of the 1st string open.

6th string, 5th fret and 5th string open
5th string, 5th fret and 4th string open
4th string, 5th fret and 3rd string open
3rd string, 4th fret and 2nd string open
2nd string, 5th fret and 1st string open

It will take time before your ear is developed and you can tune electric guitars accurately. So if you're a beginner, I guess you've got a lot of work to do. Learning to tune a guitar by ear is very beneficial. It can help you develop your ear.

You can also tune electric guitars by octaves.

An octave is the interval between two notes with the same name. Let's say you play the C major scale: C D E F G A B C. In that case the two C's are one octave apart.

  • Play the 6th string open. Play the 5th string on the 7th fret. They should be one octave apart.

  • Play the 5th string open. Play the 4th string on the 7th fret. They should be one octave apart.

  • Play the 4th string open. Play the 3rd string on the 7th fret. They should be one octave apart.

  • Play the 3rd string open. Play the 2nd string on the 8th fret. They should be one octave apart.

  • Play the 2nd string open. Play the 1st string on the 7th fret. They should be one octave apart.

6th string open and 5th string, 7th fret
5th string open and 4th string, 7th fret
4th string open and 3rd string, 7th fret
3rd string open and 2nd string, 8th fret
2nd string open and 1st string, 7th fret

Some guitarists tune electric guitars by using chords. Just play a chord and tune the strings so the chord sounds right.

Hope you've got it all covered and your electric guitar is perfectly tuned.
